Abstract

The discussion of abrogation (naskh), in addition to jurisprudence (fiqh) and the principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), is regarded as one of the significant branches of Qur’anic sciences. Alongside other fields, it plays a fundamental role in the interpretation and application of the verses of the Holy Qur’an. Consequently, it has been widely accepted by the majority of Islamic scholars, who have substantiated its validity with numerous transmitted (naqli) and rational (aqli) evidences.

Abrogation refers to the replacement of an earlier divine ruling with a subsequent divine ruling, and it has explicitly and frequently occurred in the Qur’an. This phenomenon originates from the knowledge and grace of the All-Wise God, for He does nothing without purpose or wisdom. Nevertheless, some individuals neglect certain divine commands, including abrogation, and dismiss it as meaningless. In reality, however, abrogation—beyond being the decree of the Almighty—embodies profound wisdom and manifold benefits.

Employing a descriptive-analytical method, this research examines the wisdoms underlying the occurrence of abrogation in the Qur’an and illustrates each through relevant Qur’anic examples. The findings indicate that abrogation in the Qur’an was intended for purposes such as divine mercy and consideration of human welfare (maslahah), the observance of gradualism in the legislation of rulings, the testing and trial of the accountable, and benevolence and ease for the Muslim community.
